Approximately 150 species of birds are found in the vicinity of Lake Kals, many of which are included in the Red Book, such as the Great bittern, the Corncrake, the Goosander, the Three-toed Woodpecker, etc. The biggest rarity here is the Black Kite nesting on the island of Lake Kals. The Ezerjānīši Holiday House is located in a place eith very diverse habitat-lake, wide reeds, a river, and a wide array of forests. Therefore, it is also possible to observe many different species of birds and animals. Lake Kals is located in the protected landscape area of Vestiena, as well as Natura 2000.
